About TARVA (The Artist Residency for Visual Art)

"Tarva" is a word from the Malvani language, spoken in the Sindhudurg district of Maharashtra. It represents a young rice sapling—a plant known for its remarkable ability to withstand heavy monsoon rains and winds. As the first step in the rice-growing process, it lays the foundation for a bountiful harvest later in the season.

We believe Tarva is the perfect metaphor for the space we are creating. Our residency offers a supportive, safe haven for emerging artists, helping them thrive and shape their visual practice.
About the founder Indrajit Khambe
Indrajit Khambe is a photographer and visual artist based in Sindhudurg, Maharashtra, India. He began his journey in photography in 2012 after spending nearly a decade in theatre, eventually discovering photography as his primary medium of artistic expression. Deeply inspired by the landscapes, people, and cultural traditions of the Konkan region, his work explores the intimate relationship between nature, memory, and everyday life.

Having lived in Sindhudurg all his life, Indrajit's practice is rooted in the region's unique geography and communities. His photographs are characterized by a quiet, observational approach that celebrates ordinary lives with empathy and authenticity.​ His work has been exhibited at leading photography festivals, galleries, and museums in India and abroad, and has been featured in numerous national and international publications. ​
Indrajit is the founder of TARVA, an initiative inspired by the idea of a rice sapling—a symbol of growth, nurturing, and new beginnings. Through TARVA, he aims to create a space where emerging artists can immerse themselves in nature, engage with local communities, and develop meaningful artistic practices. The residency encourages slow observation, creative experimentation, and dialogue between art, ecology, and place, offering young artists an environment where they can find inspiration, create new work, and grow together.
